Bac Can

Bac Kan is one of the special provinces in the Northeastern part of Vietnam located at the hilly and mountainous area, surrounded with rivers. About 170km far away from Hanoi to Bac Kan town the only town of the province, it is one of the least populated provinces in the northern midlands and mountain areas of Vietnam ,the main ethnic groups in the province in decreasing number, are ethnic Kinh, Tay, Nung and Dao.

Bac Can is a mountainous terrain with rich natural resources of minerals and forests, especially primitive forests with rich of flora and fauna. The slowly development of the province seems to be helpful to maintain and preserve the particular of the minority culture and the beauty of nature.  It has numerous mountains, rivers and lakes which are very scenic. Ba Be National Park, Dau Dang Waterfall, Ba Be Lake, Puong Cave and lake lie within its borders.

Geography

Bac Can is a mountainous province, sharing its border with Cao Bang Province to the north, Tuyen Quang Province to the west, Lang Son Province to the south-east, and Thai Nguyen Province to the south. The topography is mainly midland, mountainous. The province has a complex network of rivers and springs.

Climate of Bac Can: There are two seasons: dry and cold lasts from April to October and hot and rainy from November to December. The cold season lasts longer in the north region. The annual average temperature is 25ºC. The annual rainfall is about 1,400mm – 1,800mm. The weather has drizzling rain and high humidity in March, April and August.

Bac Can has natural of mineral and forest, especially primitive forests with rich of flora and faune. Aside that, natural gives the province many interesting sights such as Ba Be National Park, Dau Dang Waterfall, Ba Be Lake, Puong Cave. Bac Can used to be a cradle of Vietnam revolution so it has many revolutionary relics as ATK in there.

Ba Be National Park in Bac Can was established in 1992, it covers an area of 100.48 km2, center of the park is the Ba Be lake, Ba Be means “three lakes” with the names are Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. the largest natural fresh water lake, stretching about 8 kilometers in the north-south direction. Unlike many lakes in Karst limestone areas, Ba Be Lake never falls dry, the maximum depth is 35 meters.

The vegetation in Ba Be National Park in Bac Can mainly consists of limestone and evergreen forest. The park is also home of many kinds of wild animals like birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibian species, the King Cobra… and worthy for its diversity in butterflies. All of these make Ba Be National park become the center of ecotourism in the north of Vietnam.

Bac Can is famous for Ba Be Lake Spring Festival with many rituals and activities as boat racing, wrestling, dancing, nem con (con throwing). The festival attracts a lot of people around the region.

Bac Can is also famous for some war relics as Na Tu, ATK… The ATK  is located in Bang Lung Town let, Cho Don District. The ATK is the abbreviation for “An Toan Khu”, meaning “safe zone” It consists of a complex of underground tunnels and rooms emboldened by a missile defense system in Cho Don. This unique and invincible complex was one of the most important venues of the Vietnam Army from 1946 to 1954, where President Ho Chi Minh and many other leaders gathered, discussed and made vital decision involving the destiny of the nation.

Bac Can Town is 166km from Hanoi. It is located on the Hanoi – Cao Bang inter-provincial No. 3. It is easy for you to go to Bac Can from Hanoi or Cao Bang.
