Dieu De Pagoda, one of four in the city to receive the patronage of Nguyen Dynasty emperors, is set back from the Dong Ba canal on one of Hue’s most atmospheric old streets. It was most recently renovated in 1955 though it dates back at least to the mid nineteenth century.

The Dieu De’s simple serenity makes it one of the most appealing pagodas in the city. Its role in the anti Diem Buddhist upheaval that shook Vietnam in the 1960s and presaged a deeper US involvement is more remarkable. Throughout the 1960s, the pagoda remained a centre of anti war activism.
